It is yet to be seen whether a market for this quality exists in Bradford. Unfortunately for us we were not booked in overnight so we did not get to retire to the hotel bedrooms two of which are luxury suites and come complete with four poster bed and Jacuzzi. The front of the hotel overlooks Lister Park. The hotel garden has chairs and tables set out on the lawn. When we walked into the bar area we were greeted warmly by the staff and seated at comfortable large leather sofas. There were huge olives and various other nibbles placed seductively on the bar for a pre dinner nibble. The atmosphere was relaxed and laid back with soft lighting. All the walls are bedecked with unique paintings commissioned especially by the hotel and they give it a modern and contemporary feel. The walls are covered with elegant wallpapers and the floors are wooden. Everything about the hotel says quality and it is obvious how much attention has gone into crafting the finished product. We ordered a beer and a glass of lime and lemonade and melted into our surroundings. The restaurant menu is creative and varied and although choice is fairly limited for people who do not eat fish or meat they are catered for. Starters including sesame seared tuna loin with a warm honey and thyme syrup and charred beef and garlic sausage with sweet soy and curly endive ranged in price from between 5.50 to 8.95. Once we ordered and the starters were prepared we walked to the dining area. The lighting in the restaurant is very subdued and the addition of candles to every table makes it very conducive for romance. The tables are laid out beautifully with huge goblets for wine glasses. We filled them with a glass of Vin de Pays Moreau 2004 Chardonnay a white wine that was exceptionally good. There is a huge amount of choice on the wine list. Even a connoisseur would have no problem finding a wine to meet with their approval. There is a wealth of choice of red white and rose and champagnes from across the world. The wines have also been chosen to reflect different budgets. Prices per bottle start at 13.25 and go up to 165. For my starter I chose the roulade of smoked salmon and prawn mousse with cucumber raita and reduced balsamic. My friend plumped for pan fried lamb biryani risotto cakes with curried fruits. Both starters were presented with great attention to detail. The attention to taste was just as acute. My friend's main course was bagbaked haddock with roasted Mediterranean vegetables potatoes and caramelised lime. I went for a chargrilled fillet of roast beef with ginger and chive mash caramelised shallots and a rich red wine jus. My reaction to my main course was not dissimilar to a certain very well known scene from the film When Harry Met Sally. Fortunately for me and unlike Meg Ryan I did not have such a large audience to witness my outburst. The beef was tender beyond belief and tasted divine melting in your mouth. The mix of flavours from the accompanying vegetables and chive mash complimented the beef beautifully. My friend reported that her meal also greatly satisfied her pallet. Next on the menu was homemade ice cream in three flavours strawberry vanilla and Guinness. We also enjoyed a caramelised lemon tart with creme fraiche. Our verdict on both was heavenly. Cappuccino coffees finished off the meal which I can safely say was one of the best I have ever eaten. LISTER MANSION 22 North Park Road Heaton. Tel 01274 495827
